“People’s lives are a direct reflection of the expectations of their peer group…”–Tony Robbins
This quote really struck me when I heard it. It gives you an idea as to why so many people don’t pursue, or even examine, the dreams that are in their hearts. We love comfort, those things and people which make us feel safe, put no pressure or risk on our lives and make us feel that we’re moving along just fine. And if we’re lacking something, well, that’s just the way life is. We want to surround ourselves and socialize with like-minded people, who think the way we do, like the things we like, go the places we go, aspire at the same level as us. But, if we talk about things that seem to be a stretch beyond our apparent ability, resources and environment, it’s considered just a pipe dream, the way things could be but probably won’t. The rest of that quote: “…If your peer group doesn’t expect much, it’s just a matter of time before you lower your expectation of yourself.”
Thing is, in order for things to change, things need to change! That especially includes who you listen to and who you are influenced by. That doesn’t necessarily mean dropping your friends and family, those you love. It does mean changing your primary focus of influence to those that will help to change those dreams into goals, aspirations and expectations. Those who don’t put limits on age, apparent ability, surroundings or resources. Who want to stretch you so you can see more, do more, expect more, achieve more, be greater.
It may start with you needing to get alone; to separate yourself from limiting thoughts and influence. Your new sphere of influence may not be physical at first; it can be through the resources of those you admire. Those that give you inspiration to achieve. Follow them virtually, read their books and writings, listen to their lectures and podcasts. It will light a fire in you that will help move you past the limits you had heretofore placed on your life. You can blaze a trail at any age, level of income or education. It just takes a shift in actions and focus.
There are lots of people who won’t be encouraging or positive about the moves you make. It’s okay. It’s gotta be okay or you won’t do it. Use that energy to propel you forward, just like you use the energy of your cheerleaders. Love on them all and continue becoming the best you. That journey has no end.
Onward! Be Blessed!
